Salvatore J. Cottone

Salvatore “Sam” Cottone, 90, of Methuen passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Saturday, May 5, 2018 at the Meadows in North Andover. Born and educated in Lawrence, he was the son of the late Rosario and Agostina (LoBello) Cottone.

He served his country in the Army during WWII as an MP during the Japanese War trials in Japan. After, Sam worked as the fire marshal and explosive supervisor for Avco/Textron in Wilmington for thirty-five years. Sam also volunteered for the American Red Cross and was an EMT.

Sam married the late Gloria (Mascarito) Cottone, the love of his life. They were just short of celebrating their sixtieth anniversary when Gloria passed in 2012. Sam was a devout Catholic, who was an active parishioner at St. Lucy Church, and lived his life in the light of Jesus. He found comfort in prayer and devotion to the Catholic faith. His most prized possessions were his family and he relished age-old Italian traditions, which kept his family close. Sam was a self-taught, extremely humble artist and found joy in painting and drawing. He will always be remembered as a strong and determined man who worked and lived for his family.

Sam was predeceased by his ten siblings and is survived by his daughters, Linda Cottone-Willey and her husband, Arnold of Methuen, and Judi Niemeyer and her husband, David of Hudson, NH; three grandchildren, Jennifer Manning and her husband, Kevin, Alex and Jim Niemeyer; two great- grandchildren, Colin and Quinn Manning; as well as several cherished and loved nieces and nephews, their spouses, and their children.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, May 10, 2018 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen, MA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 11th at St. Lucy Church, 254 Merrimack St., Methuen. Burial will follow at St. Mary-Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sam may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or via www.stjude.org.
