June 28, 1933 ~ July 22, 2021 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Tribute

Salvatore M. Canto, age 88, of Salem, NH, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 22, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Michaelangelo and Rose (Marguerite) Canto.

Born and raised in Lawrence, MA, Salvatore graduated from Lawrence High School, class of 1951. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to Lawrence and in that year was married to Mary V. (Cain) Canto. They made their home in Lawrence and started their family.

After enjoying a thirty-eight year career at Raytheon, Salvatore retired as a fabrication manager.
Following his retirement, Salvatore and his companion, the late Rose Kay, moved to the North Hampton area. In 2016, Salvatore then moved to Salem, NH.

In his free time, Salvatore enjoyed spending time with his friends, often playing 45s. He also liked to garden, and was a very skilled cook. Family was most important, especially his grandchildren, of whom he was so proud. Always present for family, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren playing sports. He was also an avid sports fan, especially the New England Patriots. Feeling blessed for his recent travels to the Amalfi coast of Italy, Salvatore loved to reminisce and share the stories of this family adventure. This was especially important to him, as it was his first time returning to Italy in over forty years.

Salvatore is survived by one sister, Cora Diodati of Andover, MA, and was predeceased by his siblings, Connie Platania, Charles Canto, and Marie Palmer.

He will be sadly missed and is survived by his children, Lynda M. Canto of Methuen, MA, Rosemary Caredo and her husband, the late Ronald, of Salem, NH, Michael T. Canto of Oakland, CA, Carole A. Somma and her husband Patrick of Andover, MA, Thomas C. Canto and his wife Catherine of North Andover; grandchildren, Jason, Kelly, Christopher, Nicole, Jade, Chelsea, Jaclyn, Alexis, Taylor, Michael, Matthew, Katie, Zachary; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
