Rosa (Ponti) LaMela passed away peacefully at age 82 at the Wingate in Haverhill, MA on August 7, 2017.
Born in Trecastagni, Sicily on September 1, 1934, Rosa suffered the loss of her parents and a brother at an early age and relocated to America at age eighteen, optimistic and bright eyed. She quickly embraced the Italian community of Lawrence/Methuen and enjoyed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Rosa fell in love with Anthony LaMela and they married in 1959. The marriage enriched Rosa's life in many ways, adding extended family and good times that live on in our memories. She worked for many years and retired from Raytheon in Andover. Rosa was a humble, gentle woman whose greatest pleasure in life was her family. Her Sunday dinners and famous meatballs and baked macaroni brought everyone to the table.
Rosa was predeceased by her loving husband, Anthony who passed away in 2008. Alzheimer's brought Rosa to the Wingate facility in 2012. In the five years she spent at the Wingate, everyone that came in contact with her marveled at her sweet disposition. Staff referred to her as their "favorite" and their "sweetheart.”
Along with the legacy of loyalty and love, Rosa leaves behind her daughter, Jean and her husband Donald Cahill of Norfolk, MA, son, Nicholas LaMela and his wife Anthy of Bradford, son John LaMela of Methuen; grandchildren, Jennifer and Donald Cahill, Alexandra (LaMela) Filippakis, Nicholas LaMela; great-grandchildren, Gavin and Olivia Cahill; and several nieces and nephews .
We are deeply grateful to the staff at the Wingate for the loving care they provided. Rosa died the way she lived, with a smile on her face.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. Funeral services will be held at the conclusion of visiting hours at 12:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rosa's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472 or www.alz.org.
