Nicholas S. Catalano, 97, of Seabrook, NH formerly of Lawrence, MA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2020, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Lawrence and was the son of the late Sebastian and Rosaria (Cutuli) Catalano.
Raised and educated in Lawrence, Nicholas was a graduate of Lawrence High School, where he met his wife, Rose. They shared seventy wonderful years together. He was a loving father and grandfather who was very active in the family business, Catalano’s Market on Newbury Street where he worked alongside his wife, Rose and held court with his customers while he cut their meat to perfection.
Nicholas was a lifelong parishioner at Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church. He also enjoyed playing cards and living life without any regrets. Nicholas was a very generous person always willing to lend a hand. Family is the one word that truly encompasses Nicholas. Leading by example, he taught his family about love, kindness, and respect by never speaking an unkind word about others.
Nicholas will be remembered as one of the good guys – a humble man, a family man, a kind and brave man, never forgetful of his roots. He enjoyed living a simple life, but anyone who sat in his presence would tell you that there was always a life lesson to be learned there. It is through those lessons and tremendous love that Nicholas’s memory will live on in those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was also a member of the Lions Club and the Italian Brotherhood.
He is predeceased by his loving wife of seventy years, Rose M. (Cicciarella) Catalano; son, Sam Catalano; and brother, Joseph Catalano.
Nicholas is survived by his cherished children, Rosalie M. Catalano of Salisbury, and Grace M. Saffie and her husband, Michael of Seabrook, NH; his two cherished grandchildren, Kristy O’Brien of Fremont, NH and Nicholas R. Catalano of Lake Worth Beach, FL; and his two great-grandchildren, Madalyn Rose and Jaxon O’Brien; sister, Catherine DeBurro of Methuen and sister-in-law, Nicolina Catalano. In addition, he leaves behind several special nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visiting hours on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. His mass of Christian burial will take place on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 10:00 AM at Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 35 Essex Street in Lawrence. Entombment will follow at St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Lawrence.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Alfio’s Society, 20 Common Street, Lawrence, MA 01840.
