Michael Manzi,
March 13, 1927 ~ June 11, 2022 (age 95) 95 Years Old
Michael Manzi, Jr., 95, of Methuen, MA passed away peacefully on June 11, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” (Moreau) Manzi in 2021. Born on March 13, 1927, he was the tenth of the late Michael and Angelina (Grillo) Manzi's eleven children.
Born on Elm Street in Lawrence, Michael attended Holy Rosary School and Central Catholic High School. He studied physics at Boston College before serving his country in the United States Navy. After being honorably discharged, he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas. A professional engineer, he worked with his brother, Albert, for Manzi Electrical Corporation, an electrical contracting business with offices in the same building on Elm Street where they lived as children and where their father once had a grocery store and restaurant.
In 1952, Michael married Betty and settled in Methuen, MA where they raised five children. They were married for almost 69 years and lived in the same house on Olive Street for 63 years. Dedication and love for his wife and children defined who he was. He was an excellent listener, confidant, and advisor. Many times he would just say, “Breathe, count up to ten, and worry about nothing.” Always positive and compassionate, he never indulged in negative discourse. He understood people and never judged.
Michael was a devout Catholic and was dedicated to his faith and his church. He was an active member of Holy Rosary Parish where he attended Mass and worked with his fellow parishioners on The Feast of the Three Saints, a Christmas party for the intellectually disabled, and Holy Name Communion breakfasts.
Michael was a Renaissance Man. He had a keen intellect and read voraciously. He earned his pilot’s license and his scuba diving certification. He taught Dale Carnegie courses to adults and later conducted science experiments with Lawrence school children. He bowled and played 45s with old friends. He learned Italian so he could communicate with his cousins on visits to Quindici and Siracusa. Throughout his life, he enjoyed travel with his wife Betty, his family, and friends.
Known as “Dad” to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Michael is survived by his children, Connie Manzi and her husband Bob Finch of West Roxbury, Attorney Michael Manzi, III and his wife Jo-Ann of Haverhill, Lea Manzi and her husband Paul Lindholm of Methuen, Mark Manzi and his wife Ruth of Methuen, Elizabeth “Betsy” Rouleau and her husband Dave of Haverhill; grandchildren, Lea, Mark, Sera, Michele, Michael, Lindsay, Ruthie, Michael, IV, Nicole, Brianna, Sonny, Victoria, David, Adam, and Lukas; great-grandchildren, Madison, Matthew “MJ”, Max, Liv, Christos (with Dad in heaven), Phoenix, Michael, V “Cinco”, Luca, Jack and Ella. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
Donations in Michael’s memory may be made to St. Basil Salvatorian Center, 30 East Street, Methuen, MA 01844 or Monastery of St. Clare, 445 River Road, Andover, MA 01810.
