Mercedes Santiago

Mercedes Santiago, age 82, longtime Lawrence, MA resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at Holy Family Hospital following complications from COVID-19. He was the husband of the late Luz Maria Santiago.

Born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, the son of the late Juana (Rodriguez) and Conrado Santiago, Mercedes moved to the United States in 1967. At that time he settled in Lawrence, a community that made him feel at home. He owned one of the first Spanish bodegas in the city of Lawrence.

In his free time, Mercedes enjoyed playing dominoes, listening to music, and spending time with his family and friends.

Mercedes was predeceased by his wife, Luz Maria Santiago, and his son, Israel Santiago.

He is survived by his children: Jose Santiago, Nelson Santiago, Eduardo Santiago, and Maribel Santiago of Lawrence. He also left a legacy of grandchildren: Andy, Israel, Jr., Krystal, Natalie, Bianka, Sylvia Marie, Joshua, Jencelis, Brianah, Jeremy, Eduardo, Jr., and Erykah.

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, services for Mercedes will be held in private with the assistance of Cataudella Funeral Home in Methuen.
