Mercedes (Valdez) Johnson, 92, of Lawrence passed away at her home with her loving family by her side. She was born in the Dominican Republic and was the daughter of the late Emilio and Tiolinda (Valdez) Harrigan.
Mrs. Johnson came to the United States in 1963 and settled in Dorchester. She moved to Lawrence in 1988. She was a very talented seamstress and worked at local manufacturing companies, and retired from the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Cambridge. She was a member of the Happy Hookers Club, Knitting Groups, and the Knitting Nanas. She was also a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Lawrence and sang in the choir.
Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by her husband, Silvano Johnson; and his children, Ruth Clements and Silverio Johnson.
She is survived by her children, Noemi Molina of CA, Dorcas Ligon and her husband, Otis of Sharon, MA, Floralida Johnson of Lawrence, and Andres Johnson of Lynn; her sisters, Amantina Destinez of FL and Marina Wells of Jamaica Plain. She also leaves ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, November 20, 2017 from 3:00-7:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Grace Episcopal Church, 35 Jackson St., Lawrence. Burial will follow at Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence.
