Mary T. Begley
September 30, 1922 ~ August 19, 2019 (age 96) 96 Years Old
It is with great sadness that the family of Mary T. Begley announces her passing on August 19, 2019 at Academy Manor Nursing Home in Andover, MA.
Mary was born in Galway, Ireland, and came to the United States of America when she was four years old. She was the oldest child of Edmond and Bridget Dillane Cloonan. Mary grew up in Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1940. She attended McIntosh School of Business.
She began her career as an executive secretary at the Pentagon during World War II and then worked for Merrimac Paper Company, Bon Secours Hospital, and Mary Immaculate Nursing Home. She retired from the town of Methuen as the secretary to fire chiefs, Duhamel and Nicolosi.
Mary loved life and enjoyed every minute of her 96+ years. She enjoyed many winters in Florida and made several trips to her beloved Ireland. Her fondest memory abroad was a trip to Italy for the canonization of Saint Marguerite D’Youville, where she saw the pope.
Mary was active in various organizations throughout her life. She belonged to the Guild of The Infant Savior, Venerini Auxiliary, The Home for the Little Wanderers, Women of Northern Essex Community College and was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 8. She also served on the Board of Directors for Mary Immaculate, founded the AMI, and was an associate of the Grey Nuns.
Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and socializing with her many friends. She loved reading mystery novels, doing crossword puzzles, playing bingo, and she was always ready for a good card game of 45s, Gin, or Scat. She loved Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Mary will be forever remembered by her daughters, Kathleen Garvey Connors of Andover, and Paula Begley Mello and her husband, Bryan, of Princeton; grandchildren, Timothy and Jenna Connors of Georgetown, Shaun and Sarah Connors of Wilmington, Mary Cate Connors of Andover, and Breanna, Michaela, and Eliana Mello of Princeton; and great-grandchildren Riley, Parker, Alexis and Olivia Connors.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Cloonan Valenti, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her husbands, James J. Garvey and Paul E. Begley; granddaughter, Angelica Mello; sister, Eileen Curry Cardone; brothers, Patrick, Edmond, Matthew, and John Cloonan; and son-in-law, Anthony “Butch” Connors.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, August 22, 2019, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. Her funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 23, 2019, at St. Monica Church, 212 Lawrence Street in Methuen. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Methuen.
