Maria E. (Nicotra) Motta, 90, of Methuen, MA, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2021, at High Point Hospice House surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband, Placido Motta and her sister, Rachela Lofaro. She was born on July 2, 1931, and was the daughter of the late Rosario and Maria (Toscano) Nicotra.
Born and raised in Sicily, Italy, Maria came the United States in 1969. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed having all her children and grandchildren come over for Sunday dinner. She also loved to sew and knit and would always make sure her children were well dressed for any special occasions. Maria’s family was her life always making sure that they were fed, loved, and happy. She instilled strong values in her children. She supported all their endeavors, encouraging them to reach for the stars.
Maria lived a simple life and she and her husband worked hard to provide for their family to ensure no one went without. She worked for twenty-seven-plus years as a seamstress at Grieco Brothers before her retirement. She was a member of the St. Rita Society at Holy Rosary Parish in Lawrence for many years. A devout Catholic, she had a strong religious belief which she carried throughout her life.
She is survived by her children, Carmelo Motta of Methuen, Anna Maria Allen of Plaistow, NH, Rosetta McDonald of Methuen, Rosario Motta of Methuen; brother, Luigi Nicotra of Pelham, NH; her eight loving grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, August 26, 2021, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street, Methuen. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 27, 2021, at 10:00 AM at Holy Rosary Parish, 35 Essex Street, Lawrence. Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence.
