Luz Maria (Figueredo) Puentes, 92, of Haverhill, MA, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Luz was born in Oriente, Cuba and was the daughter of the late Ricardo and Maria (Sotto) Figueredo.
Mrs. Puentes was raised and educated in Cuba where she was a licensed nurse who served many years with the Red Cross. In 1966, she and her husband Pedro left a communist regime and everything they owned in Cuba and immigrated to the United States with their three daughters on a “freedom flight” and never looked back. This decision and the sacrifices that came with it gave their family opportunities not offered in Cuba at that time.
Besides raising her daughters, Luz worked as a seamstress for Grieco Brothers in Lawrence from 1966 to 1992. She enjoyed cooking delicious Cuban meals for her family and friends. She also loved spending time with her extended family and her dog Chico.
Mrs. Puentes was predeceased by her beloved husband, Pedro Puentes.
She is survived by her three loving daughters, Rebecca Puentes of Haverhill, Maria LoPiano and her husband Leo of North Andover, and Beatriz Zipper and her husband Paul of Haverhill; her four cherished grandchildren: Kristopher Landry, wife Sarah and his daughter Emma, Alexander Landry, wife Ashley and his children Alexander, Melody and Liam, Robert Zipper, and Samuel LoPiano. In addition to her four great-grandchildren she leaves many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. Her funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 14, 2019, at St. Lucy Church, 254 Merrimack Street in Methuen. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Methuen. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
