Lucille A. “Lu” (Candela) Lavin, 67, of Haverhill, MA, passed away Sunday, August 23, 2020, at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Lawrence, MA, on March 1, 1953 to the late Michael and Prudence (Cavallaro) Candela, Lu married John “Jay” Lavin on August 14, 1976 and they just celebrated forty-four years together.

Lu was a kind-hearted, caring woman who loved her family dearly. She worked part-time as a teacher for Haverhill Public Schools. Her full-time and most loved job, however, was raising her two sons. She was known for her artistic ability and beautiful, handmade Christmas cards and ornaments. She was also a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. Lu loved to travel Maine’s seacoast, particularly walking the Marginal Way and the beach with her dogs. She loved cooking and named her husband, Jay, as her official taste tester.

She enjoyed the springtime when she could turn the yard into a flowering masterpiece. She also loved to read and complete crossword puzzles for fun. Lu was quiet, unassuming and genuine, but always enjoyed a good laugh and acting out the Three Stooges with her sons.

The family would also like to express their gratitude to the staff at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Dara-Farber Cancer Institute for their loving care, compassion and support through her time of need.

Lu is survived by her husband of forty-four years, John “Jay” Lavin; her sons, Derek Lavin and his wife, Jessica of Braintree, and Trevor Lavin and his wife, Melissa of Methuen. She also leaves behind her two grandchildren, Emerson and Dahlia Lavin; and her beloved dog and sidekick, Faye. In addition, she is survived by her brothers: Michael Candela of Lancaster, PA, Rich Candela and his wife, Brenda of Derry, NH, Chuck Candela and his wife, Cathy of Pelham, NH, and John Candela of San Francisco, CA. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, August 27, 2020, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. A funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
