Welcome to the memorial page for

Josephine Germano

January 22, 1917 ~ November 22, 2017 (age 100) 100 Years Old
Josephine M. Germano, 100, of Lawrence, passed away Wednesday, November 22, at the Mary Immaculate Nursing Home with her loving family by her side.

Josephine was born in Solarino, Provenci di Sicily, Italy, the daughter of the late Paolo and Lucia (Aparo) Germano and immigrated to America in 1920 at the age of three, where the family first settled in Lawrence and later, Methuen, MA.   Josephine attended the Methuen School System.  She was an accomplished seamstress and worked in the local garment industry until her retirement.

Josephine's passions included gardening and creating floral arrangements and she was a past member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club in Andover.  She also loved classical music and playing the piano, often entertaining her adoring nieces and nephews.

Her nurturing personality, gentle demeanor, and love of children earned her the title of "Favorite Aunt" and "Best Babysitter" to three generations of family members.

Josephine's Catholic faith was the moral compass by which she lived her life and set an example for others to follow.  She was a Lay Carmelite, a member of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.  She attended pilgrimages to Fatima, Medjugorje, and the Holy Land.

Josephine's curious nature and zest for learning about people, places and customs took her to many exotic destinations.  To Josephine, there were no strangers, only friends she hadn't yet met!  She traveled extensively and visited five of the seven continents.  Her most adventurous trip was to China in 1989, when, during her stay,  student-led demonstrations in Beijing developed into the Tiananmen Square protests.

Josephine was predeceased by her siblings, her sisters: Sr. Pauline Germano, M.P.V., Maria Gioioso, Nina Bordonaro, Carmela Bordonaro, Lucia Germano and her brothers: Santo, Francesco, and Giuseppe Germano.

Josephine is survived locally by her nieces: Marylou Noonan and her husband, Michael, and Paula Moeckel; her nephew, Sam Gioioso and his wife Barbara of Arizona; their respective children and grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends throughout the United States and Europe.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Mary Immaculate for the loving care provided to Josephine during her stay.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 from 9:00 - 10:30 AM at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen.  A funeral mass will follow at 11:00 AM at St. Lucy Church, 254 Merrimack St., Methuen.  Burial will be at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence.
