Grace S. Zappala

Grace S. (SanGiorgio) Zappala, 97, of Lawrence passed away Friday, May 31, 2019 at Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover. She was born in Trecastagni,Sicily and was the daughter of the late Gabriel and Nunzia (Pappalardo) SanGiorgio.

Raised and educated in Italy, Grace moved to Lawrence at the age of twelve and resided there for the greater part of her life. She became a homemaker tending to her family’s needs first and foremost. She was dedicated to her family and her loved ones. Grace enjoyed the occasional trips to Salisbury Beach, cooking, gardening, and most especially attending to her garden of flowers and tomatoes. She was proud of her achievements but she was most proud of her family, in particular, her beautiful grandchildren. Also, she was a member of St. Rita’s Sodality and Sons of Italy in Methuen.

Grace was predeceased by the love of her life, with whom she shared forty-three years of marriage, Salvatore M. Zappala; and siblings, Maggie Leone and Archangelo SanGiorgio.

She leaves behind her adored children, Donna Z. Kelly and her husband, David of Lowell, Stephen M. Zappala and his wife, Margaret of Andover, and Cynthia Z. Harkness and her husband, Harry of Canton; cherished grandchildren, Michael and Carolina Zappala, and Samuel and Maxwell Harkness. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 3, 2019 at 10:00 AM in Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 35 Essex Street in Lawrence. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence. In lieu of flowers, donations in Grace’s memory may be made to St. Rita's Sodality, 35 Essex Street, Lawrence, MA 01841 or St. Alfio’s Society, 20 Common Street, Lawrence, MA 01841.
