George “Giragos” Tashjian of Methuen, MA passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones, April 11, 2022, at the age of 93. He was born in Haverhill, MA December 8, 1928 to Hampartzoum “Harry” and Vartanoosh “Sweet Rose” Tashjian.
A 1947 graduate of the C.W. Arnold Trade School and Haverhill High, George trained as an auto mechanic. He later went on to earn a B.S. degree at Fitchburg State University graduating Cum Laude.
George was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1951 during the Korean War serving with the “Hell on Wheels” armored infantry division stationed in Germany as a heavy equipment mechanic. While in Europe he had several opportunities to visit with his aunt and uncle’s family residing in Marseille, France along with travels to other European countries and sites.
In 1965, George was hired by the G.L.R.V Technical High School to open its automotive department as a state certified shop instructor. In 1975 he began working with the Medford MA school system to help initiate several unique (for its time) programs, some of which included: intro to vocational subjects, advancement opportunities for challenged students, one on one tutelage, industrial arts programs and other positions as needed. Upon retiring, he worked part time at Southern New Hampshire University for many years as a computer lab instructor. George was a devoted 50+ year member of the Knights of Vartan, Arakadz Lodge and was a member of the Armenian Apostolic Church at Hye Pointe, Haverhill, MA.
He loved New England with its four seasons and its ethnic diversity. George enjoyed caring for his home, fruit trees and working on cars. You could usually find him tending his lawn or under the hood of a car. He enjoyed all areas and branches of history, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine and the original Atari 800 home computer and so on. He was a man of many hobbies and interests. He and his wife Janet traveled extensively from the time they married. George loved all people with no distinction but especially his Armenian kinsman. His favorite saying was Popeye’s, “I y’am what I y’am” another one was, “words mean a lot.” He was a kind and gentle man and always saw the good in people.
George lived a full and happy life enjoying all that it had to offer, through those that he met and that which he did.
George was predeceased by his parents; brother, Albert; sisters, Elizabeth Berberian, and Esther and her husband Michael Hazarvartian.
He leaves behind the love of his life, his beloved wife, Janet (Warchut) (Siney) Tashjian; two dear children, Linda Campbell and Mark Siney and his companion Mary Jo Correia; nephew, Dr. Kim Hazarvartian, wife Susan and children; nieces, Robin Hazarvatian, Jane Berberian, Linda Stingley and children; grandson, Sandro Carvahlo; granddaughter, Erica Siney; brothers-in law, Paul and Bill Warchut, Stu and his wife Jane (Warchut) Klotzle; as well as many extended family members and close friends.
