Gary Charles Pappalardo, died in hospice on January 20, 2019 after a long illness.

Gary was born on September 30 1964. He grew up and attended school in Natick MA, was a Boy Scout and graduated from Wayland High School in 1986. He travelled with his family and enjoyed summers at Salisbury Beach MA and on his family’s boat.

After school, he attended A New Day transitional home in Groton MA until settling into a group home in Brookline MA where he lived with nine other residents and staff for 29 years.

Gary was an active member in his Brookline house and community and was a high roller in his bowling league, played softball and was a Special Olympian. He was an advocate for his friends in the disabled community and was one of the folks who lobbied the Commonwealth of Massachusetts legislature to change the name of the agency from the Department of Mental Retardation to the Department of Developmental Services.

He was the son of the late Salvatore J. and Averill S. Pappalardo; sister, Marie Pappalardo; aunt, Suzy Smith, and uncle, Angelo Pappalardo.

He is survived by uncle Fred and Vickie Pappalardo and aunt Sara and Robert Fogg and their families; and niece, Maria and Lance Koutny and their daughters, Isabella and Emma.

In the summer, there will be a gathering of friends and family in Brookline MA, a burial of ashes at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, CT, and a scattering of ashes in the ocean.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the 255 St. Paul Street Condo Trust and mailed to Specialized Housing Inc., 45 Bartlett Crescent, Brookline MA 02446.
