Emily M. Grasso
January 28, 1924 ~ January 11, 2019 (age 94) 94 Years Old
Emily (Hajj) Grasso, 94, of Andover, MA, passed peacefully on January 11, 2019 surrounded by her family, at Atria Marland Place in Andover. She was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Kanan) Hajj.
She was born on January 28, 1924 in Lawrence, MA, and spent most of her life there. She graduated from Lawrence High School, where she met the love of her life, John Grasso.
In later years, Emily was employed at Raytheon in Andover, from where she retired in 1985. She and John joined the Carletonville Neighborhood Association, a group of activists that saved Emily’s elementary school, the Wetherbee School, from being torn down. They were also instrumental in the development of the Lawrence River Front State Park, one of the city’s most beautiful parks along the Merrimack River.
Emily volunteered as a docent at the Merrimack Valley Textile Museum, where she shared her experience and knowledge of Lawrence’s rich history in the textile industry. She was a proud member of Our Lady’s Sodality at St. Patrick’s Parish, the American Lebanese Awareness Association that supports education in the community and the Daughters of St. Anthony’s.
But Emily’s richest legacy is her love of family. She and John were married for fifty-one years, until his death in 1996.
Emily leaves behind four daughters, Patricia Lee and her husband, Robert of Ft. Collins, CO, Janet Lees and her partner, Andrew Currie of North Andover, Gail Grasso of Oak Park, IL, and Marylou Grasso and her husband, Kevin Connors of Andover; six grandchildren, Nikki, Alana, Jonathan, Christian, Emily and Gillian; five great-grandchildren, Colin, Daniel, Grayson, Gannon, and Grian; and her sister, Effie Saba of Lawrence. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
The family requests that donations can be made to the ALAA, Box 2244, Methuen, MA 01844.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 from 3:00-7:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley in Methuen. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, January 17th at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony Maronite Church, 145 Amesbury Street in Lawrence.
