Edmund J. Hickey, Sr.

Edmund Joseph Hickey of Lawrence, MA, 87, passed away on March 11, 2020, after a short illness. Ed was the husband of forty-seven years to the late Helen (Blais) Hickey, who died on July 28, 2007.

Born in Lawrence, Ed was the son of the late Edmund J. and Mary (Igo) Hickey. He graduated from Lawrence High in 1950, then enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War conflict, where he was assigned as Quartermaster on the destroyer USS Waldron DD-669. Ed’s three brothers also served in the Navy during the Korean War. He was able to meet or see his brothers on their respective ships during training exercises near Norfolk, VA, Puerto Rico, and Japan. In total, he visited twenty-four countries and finished his duties as quartermaster second class.

Upon leaving the Navy, Ed was employed at Western Electric, later AT&T, and Lucent Technologies where he met Helen. He retired in 1994, working in program management for fiber optic products. He enjoyed many years of his retirement with Helen at their East Harwich home on Cape Cod.

Ed enjoyed gardening, especially growing several varieties of tomato and pepper plants, bird watching with his wife, reading, and photography. Both Ed and Helen loved being with their grandchildren. He was actively involved with the South West Lawrence Little League serving as treasurer during the late 60s/early 70s and enjoyed watching the Red Sox with Helen. He was an active member of St. Patrick Church and volunteered as an alter server at funerals.

He is survived by his son, Edmund, Jr., husband of Karen Hickey of Amherst, NH; son, Paul of Haverhill, MA; daughter, Patricia of Newburyport, MA; and son, Kenneth, husband of Meryl Hickey of Framingham, MA; grandchildren, Matthew, Mikayla, and Alex; and several nieces and nephews. He leaves one brother, William Hickey of Salem, NH. He was also the brother of the late Catherine Hickey Dudley of Salem, NH, James Hickey of Los Alamitos, CA, and John Hickey of Chelmsford, MA.

The family has requested the services to be private out of concern for the current Corona Virus situation. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cor Unum c/o St. Patrick’s Rectory, 118 South Broadway, Lawrence, MA 01843 or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by the Cataudella Funeral Home in Methuen.
