Tribute

Joseph B. Guerrera, MD, 75, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on May 30, 2019. Born in Methuen, he was the son of the late Dr. Joseph A. Guerrera and Aura (Citarella) Guerrera. Raised and educated in Lawrence, he attended St. Mary Grammar School and Central Catholic High School. He graduated from St. Michael’s College in Vermont in 1964 and Georgetown Medical School in Washington, DC in 1968.

Joe proudly served in the US Army as a Flight Surgeon with the 165th Aviation Group in Vietnam and at Davison Airfield at Fort Belvoir in Alexandria, VA attaining the rank of Major. Returning to Boston after the service, he completed his training as Chief Medical Resident at Boston City Hospital. A dedicated physician, he practiced Internal Medicine in Andover and North Andover for thirty years and was known for being a caring and strong advocate for his patients.

In his spare time, Joe enjoyed the Red Sox, golf, traveling, and poker nights “with the boys.” More than anything he cherished time with his family and most especially his adored grandchildren.

Joe was the beloved husband of Ann (Martin) Guerrera with whom he shared fifty-two years of marriage. He was a devoted father to Amy Stabile and her husband Gerald of Andover, Bridget Cox of Andover, Melissa Constable and her husband Aaron of North Andover. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph David Guerrera and also leaves his daughter-in-law, Ann Dirsa of Salem, NH. He will be sadly missed as “Papa” to eleven grandchildren: Carly and Julia Stabile; Ella, Luke and Beckett Cox; Avery and Sadie Constable; Joseph and Carolyn Guerrera; Alexa Soni and Joslyn Stabile; and great-grandchildren Sophie Opperman, Finn Soni and Marlowe Soni. He also leaves brother, Richard Guerrera of Lawrence, sister, Louisa Murdoch and her husband Randall of Hackensack, NJ, sister, Mia Guerrera of Rockport, and brother-in-law Arthur McCabe of Andover. He was predeceased by his sister, Constance Kaufman.

The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers and Merrimack Valley Hospice for their kind and compassionate care and who made it possible for Joe to remain at home.
