Donald R. Hughes, 94, peacefully passed away on Saturday, September, 26, 2020 at The Meadows Health Center at Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover, MA. He was the devoted husband of the late Phyllis J. Hughes, with whom he shared seventy wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Minneapolis, MN in 1926, the son of the late Douglas and Eunice (Norstrom) Hughes, Donald graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School. Shortly afterward, he joined the United States Navy, serving his country proudly until his Honorable discharge in 1946. Upon his return home, he attended Cornell University and the University of Rochester, NY, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Donald began his career as an engineer with General Electric Co. in Erie, PA, and then in Louisville, KY, Brockport, NY, and finally in Ashland, MA. He then accepted the position of VP at Scovill Manufacturing Co., Hamilton Beach Division, in Waterbury, CT. Following this, he became the Executive VP at D.G. O’Brien, Inc. in Framingham, MA and he later retired as President of the Framingham Savings Bank.
Donald dedicated many years to community service. He served as President of the Purchasers Association in Louisville, KY, was a member of Rotary International, and he was a member of the Executive Committee of Trustees for the Framingham Union Hospital. Donald was also President of the South Middlesex Chamber of Commerce and the Framingham YMCA, and he was a Trustee of Grace Congregational Church in Framingham. He was an Executive Service Corp Volunteer and a Trustee of the Wolfeboro Corinthian Yacht Club in Wolfeboro, NH.
Donald is predeceased by his wife, Phyllis J. Hughes, his fraternal twin brother, Douglas W. Hughes, Jr., and his granddaughter, Beth Anne Russo.
He will be missed and is survived by his three loving children, Donald R. Hughes, Jr. and his wife, Peggy, David B. Hughes and his wife, Wendy, and Laurel J. Hughes; his grandchildren, Justin M. Hughes, Jonathan D. Hughes, and Rebekah J. McGowan; and his great-grandchildren, Joseph, Hanya, Lucas, Lilly, and Samara.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours between the hours of 10:00-11:00 AM on Thursday, October 8, 2020, at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. A service will follow at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 8, 2020, in the funeral home chapel. Donations in Donald’s memory may be made to the BrightFocus Foundation.
