Christine E. Cleary, 73, of Methuen, MA, passed away December 25, 2021, at home with her family by her side loving and honoring her until the end. Born in Lawrence, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Evelyn (Criticos) Cleary.
Raised and educated in Methuen, Christine was a graduate of Tenney High School and Northern Essex Community College. She worked for many years at Market Basket in North Andover, MA, where she was affectionately known as “The Fish Queen.” Christine retired after 20 years of service when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
As with any challenge she faced, Christine fought cancer tenaciously, winning the battle and joining other warriors to become a breast cancer survivor. Early in her retirement, Christine enjoyed taking walks, socializing with neighbors, and rescuing many furry friends. Through the years there was nothing she enjoyed more than spending time with her daughters and her grandchildren, and any mention of them would be sure to bring a smile to her face. Christine was especially proud to know that her granddaughter and best friend, Mekenna, graduated with her nursing degree this past spring. She was known for her sassy spirit and witty sense of humor, which will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Christine’s love and compassion for animals ran deep and her soft spot for dogs was evident as she never knew a “stray.” She will be especially missed by her Dachshund, Simon.
She was predeceased by her brother, Michael Cleary earlier this year.
Christine is survived by her daughters, Heidi Philbrick and her husband Christopher and Kelly Silva and her husband Albert, all of Methuen; her sisters, Janet Mellor and her husband John of Methuen and Susan Jutras of Londonderry, NH; and her grandchildren, Mekenna and Cameron Philbrick, and Shae Silva.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Christine’s memory to Beacon Hospice, 290 Merrimack Street, Suite 242, Lawrence, MA 01843.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, January 3, 2022, from 4:00-7:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
