Charles “Károly” Peikert, 89 of Lawrence, MA, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2020, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Gabriella (Tihanyi) Peikert. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, the son of the late Walther and Olga (Mann) Peikert.
Charlie was a proud Hungarian, who served his country in the Hungarian Army and fought as a Freedom Fighter before and during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. He and his wife, Gabriella, escaped with only the clothes on their back in the dead of the night with many of their fellow countryman.
They eventually settled in Lawrence just before Christmas of 1956 and Charlie was working by the start of the New Year. He worked at Merrimade and East Print in Lawrence prior to working at Raytheon, from which he retired. Charlie and Gabi soon welcomed their first child, Walther, then Sylvia, followed by Kathy. They made the best of their new life in America, however never forgot their home country and family. Although he had been in the country most of his life and spoke beautiful English, his Hungarian accent never diminished. They welcomed many new friends, both from the old country and new, who became family.
Charlie enjoyed to travel with his wife through Central Europe taste-testing various specialty beers and he loved to return to Budapest to visit family. An avid photographer, Charlie always carried one of his many cherished cameras and enjoyed sharing photos of family and travels.
Predeceased by his brother, Walther, and his granddaughter, Wendy, Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-three years, Gabriella (Tihanyi) Peikert; his children, Krisztina Peikert of Budapest, Hungary, Walther Peikert and his wife Maryanne of Londonderry, NH, Sylvia Theberge and her husband Donald of Methuen, MA, and Kathy Brasseur and her husband Brian of Lexington, SC; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit with Charlie’s family between the hours of 4:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, August 20, 2020, at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. A funeral mass for Charlie will be celebrated at 9:00 AM on Friday, August 21, 2020, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish at St. Theresa Church, 22 Plymouth Street in Methuen.
