Anna Tulley

November 26, 1924 ~ June 12, 2022 (age 97) 97 Years Old

Tribute

Anna Manzi Tulley passed away peacefully with her family by her side Sunday, June 12, 2022, in Windham, NH. She was the beloved wife of the late Attorney Raymond D. Tulley, Sr. who died July 17, 2010.

Born in Lawrence, MA on November 26, 1924, to the late Michael and Angela Manzi, Anna joined a large loving family as the ninth of eleven children. She was a graduate of Holy Rosary Grammar School, Lawrence High School, and Emmanuel College with a BS degree in Biology. She went on to Boston University completing half the credits needed for her Master’s Degree.

An aunt by the time she was eleven, Anna loved children and loved caring for and teaching them, so it is no surprise that she left her master’s program and started a teaching career. What was surprising was that she went all the way to a high school in Madawaska, Maine right on the Canadian border to do it. There she taught English and math and headed the Drama Department. A teaching opportunity in Haverhill, as well as a little home sickness, brought her back to Massachusetts. She taught in the Haverhill school system until her first child was born and resumed teaching when her youngest went to high school, first at the Adult Learning Center and then at the Leonard School both in Lawrence.

Anna married Ray in 1951 and together they raised thirteen children. They found their dream home on Prospect Street in Methuen in 1960 and she remained there until 2019 when she moved in with her youngest daughter, Theresa, and her family in Windham, NH.

A lifelong communicant at Holy Rosary Church in Lawrence, Anna was a member of St. Rita’s Sodality and Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality. Her Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she was devastated when in her nineties she could no longer drive herself to daily Mass. Special thanks to Patricia Ferguson who brought her Holy Communion for years and was always willing to sit and talk thereby keeping her in touch with her beloved parish.

Anna was preceded in death by her grandson and daughter-in-law, David Tulley and Maureen Burns Tulley. She was also predeceased by all her siblings and their spouses including her sisters: Ida and John Giarrusso, Flora Manzi, Lena and James Giarrusso, Mary and Laurence Stewart, Sister Mary Angelina of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Angelina and Wilbur Hyatt; and her brothers: Vincent and Rita Manzi, William and Irene Manzi, Albert and Anna Manzi, and Michael and Elizabeth Manzi.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: Thomas, Angela and Brian Zinsmeister, Dennis and Patricia, Raymond, Joseph and Carol, Michael and Melinda, Christopher and Joell, Maryanne and Walther Peikert, Patrick and Sandra, Theresa and Gregory Taylor, Daniel and Julie, John, and Matthew and Donna. Her legacy also includes 31 grandchildren and 10 (and a half – due 11/22) great- grandchildren, and too many to count nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Monastery of St. Clare, 445 River Road, Andover, MA 01810 and St. Basil’s Salvatorian Center, 30 East Street, Methuen, MA 01844.
