Reflections of Her Life
Alberta Gardenia Harvey-Douglas
May 16, 1935 - December 11, 2022

Alberta Hinson Harvey Douglas, affectionately known as “Bert,” was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on May 16, 1935, the eldest daughter of twelve children to William and Janie Berry Hinson. She was raised and educated in the Philadelphia Public School System. Alberta furthered her education at the Thompson Institute where she received her degree as Executive Secretary in 1989. She worked at the Centre Square building in center city of Philadelphia for over 22 years until she retired in 1996.

Alberta was a loving, beautiful, and God-fearing Christian who was a devoted member of the 59th Street Baptist Church in Philadelphia until she relocated to the Boston area in 1996 and joined the Andover Baptist Church. Shortly after relocating to Massachusetts on June 21, 1997, she married William T. “Billy” Douglas, and their union lasted for more than 22 years until his passing on May 17, 2020.

The joys in Alberta’s life included listening to gospel music and attending gospel shows, a fondness of R&B, and old-school soul music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, vacations with family in Ocean City, Maryland, doing word puzzles and playing challenging board games with friends, and her great-great-grandchildren, and socializing and playing card games with her friends. Alberta will be remembered most for her loving heart, giving spirit, and motherly devotion to her family.

In 1951, Alberta married Kenneth Herman Harvey, and to that union were born ten children. She leaves to celebrate her life, five sons, Kenneth Harvey, Jr., Derrick Harvey, Dennis Harvey, Michael Harvey, and Darren Harvey. Her son, Lester Harvey, preceded her in death on October 22, 2013. She leaves four daughters, Celeste Davis, Cheryl Harvey-McPherson, Valerie Jackson, and Teresa Armstrong. Alberta was also blessed to have three generations of grandchildren, twenty-five grandchildren, forty-seven great-grandchildren, and sixteen great-great-grandchildren.

Alberta leaves to cherish her memory, her aunt, Lillian Smith, and six siblings, Gwendolyn McKoy, Shirley Hinson, Lennon Hinson, Jane Hinson, Angela Hinson, and David Hinson. Five of her siblings preceded her in death, Charles Hinson, William Hinson, Jeannette Green, Raymond Hinson, and Madeline Hinson. She was also blessed to have a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Many will sadly miss her but her legacy will live on forever.

Lovingly Submitted,
The Family

I waited patiently for the Lord: He turned to me and heard my cry.  Psalm 40:1
