William T. Hitchmoth

Retired SSG. William T. Hitchmoth, 78, entered into eternal rest with his family by his side at his Methuen, MA home on August 12, 2017. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War who spent twenty-one years in the U.S. Army and was awarded the prestigious Army Meritorious service medal, along with many others, before retiring in 1982 with full honors.

He was born on November 24, 1938 in Methuen, MA, to Dorothy Morris and Harry Hitchmoth, both of Methuen, MA. He joined the United States Army in 1962, and served three tours in Vietnam to include the Tet Offensive as part of the 25th Infantry Division, Tropic Lightening. He married his wife of 48 years, Camille Bonanno in 1969 and together they had four children, who they raised while traveling the world spanning three continents and four states. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and the DAV. He was very proud of his military service and his life exemplified Army values: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal courage.

After his military service, he worked at Merrimack College from 1983 until he retired in 1994. SSG. Hitchmoth was a brave and loyal soldier, as well as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He spent his retirement years enjoying his family, bowling and golfing with “the guys”, scratching lottery tickets, and visiting casinos before succumbing to a long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Camille of Methuen, long-time owner of Salon 110; daughter, Dorothy and her husband Barry Wigger of New London, NH; son, William of Methuen; daughter, Amy of Methuen; son, Peter and his wife Hayley of Stratham, NH; seven grandchildren: Andrew, Kyle, David, Sophie, Julia, Cooper, and Coraline; sisters and their spouses: Dorothy and her husband William Bonanno, Linda Kurek, Nancy Heenan and her husband Rick, Gayle Eames and her husband Morgan (Skip) and Pamela Hitchmoth; brother, James Rau; his sisters in-law: Eileen Giordano and her husband Larry, and Barbara Bonanno-Frascone; his brothers in-law: Michael Bonanno, Charles Bonanno, Robert Bonanno, his God- child, Mary Lou Rau Richards; and many loving, nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends.
He is preceded by his sisters in-law: Rita Bonanno, Anna Bonanno, Mary Bonanno, Elaine Bonanno, Mary Ann Bonanno, Mildred Bonanno; and his brothers in-law: Clement and Rocco Bonanno, and Thomas Frascone.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. His funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at St. Lucy Church, 254 Merrimack Street, Methuen Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Methuen.
