Gina M. (Cappello) Gatchell, 48, of Methuen passed away Saturday, September 2, 2017 at home surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Methuen and was the daughter of Mary (Larochelle) Kavanagh of Methuen and the late John A. Cappello.
Gina was a graduate of Lawrence High School and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She worked for twenty years as a business analyst at C.G.I. Technologies. From the moment Gina came into this world, she had a light inside her that burned brightly and attracted people to her like moths to a flame. As she grew from a small child into a teenager and then an adult, the light attracted more and more people to her. Everyone knew her name. Everyone knew her smile. Everyone knew her laugh. Everyone knew her sense of humor. Everyone loved her. When she became a mother, she brought two more bright lights into the world and together they shined like the brightest stars in the sky. Gina was a kind, gentle, and loving mother. She would do anything and everything for her children. The day she found out that she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer was an extremely sad day for all that loved her. How could this have happened? This kind, gentle, and sweet woman that everyone loved was about to face the hardest battle of her life. And face it she did and she did with an army of hundreds of family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. As long as she was fighting, we were all fighting with her. We were G Strong.
Gina also was an amazing athlete and even continued to play softball while going through chemotherapy treatments at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. She continued to amaze people with her bravery. She always stayed positive. She always looked for the bright side and she always managed to look her best, even on days when she felt her worst. She continued to live her life. She went to concerts, she went to plays, she went to the ocean. She even had a house party for her closest friends just one week before her passing. She lived her life and showed us all what it means to be tough and loving at the same time. She did it all with dignity and grace. When she came home from her last hospital stay, it was to continue to live her life. The day was spent with friends and family. It was a beautiful day for a beautiful woman. Although we may not have this bright light in our lives, the people that knew her and loved her will keep her light shining bright.
In lieu of flowers, the family will be setting up a trust fund for her children. Donations can be sent to her sister, Danielle Cappello Greeley at 172 Main Avenue, South Hampton, NH 03827.
The family would also like to thank the doctors and staff at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, her visiting nurses, and the compassionate hospice staff at Care Dimensions, who assisted the family when Gina came home to spend her final days with family and friends.
Besides her father, Gina was predeceased by her brother, John A. Cappello, Jr.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Edward Gatchell; her children, Madison Drouin and Brody Gatchell; her siblings, Danielle Cappello and her husband Salvatore Jabour of South Hampton, NH, Jay Cappello of Salem, NH, Anna Cayer and her husband Richard of Dracut, Matthew Hemeon and his wife Deborah of Haverhill, Marie Cappello of Hampton, NH; her dearest lifelong friends, Moira Murphy of Haverhill, James Wilson of Boston, and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 4:00-7:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen.
