SALEM, N.H. Ruth Doris (Diamont) Faro, 89, died on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at a family residence on Beacon Hill in Boston.
Born in North Andover on February 6, 1925, Ruth—known to family and friends alike as “Dee”—was the daughter of Josephine (Zielonis) and Anthony Daymont, and a graduate of Johnson High School. Extremely well-traveled herself, she was a skilled and sought-after travel agent at Sutton Travel in Lawrence for more than 30 years. Uncharacteristically for a woman in the 1950s and 1960s, her work took her as far afield as Egypt (where she was a guest of the Egyptian government), Japan, Thailand, Argentina, and South Africa, among other countries, as well as to Italy, of which she was extremely fond.
She lived most of her life at 53 Howard Street on Prospect Hill in Lawrence with her husband of 44 years, Alfred “Fred” Faro. Together, they enjoyed winter vacations on St. Maarten and Aruba, and spent the summer at Salisbury Beach with their grandchildren. She was member of the Italian Women’s Club. In her later retirement, she moved to Salem, N.H., though she continued to volunteer for many years at Lawrence General Hospital, having previously trained as a nurse in her early twenties at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Fred, and her son, Gerald “Gerry” Faro. She is survived by her son, John “Jay” Faro, and daughter-in-law, Florence (Zanni) Faro, of Boston; her daughter-in-law, Constance (Padova) Faro, of Salem, N.H.; her grandchildren: Dr. Jeremy Faro, and his husband, Joshua Meyers, of Cambridge; Justin Faro, of Methuen; and Dr. Elissa Faro, also of Cambridge; a great-granddaughter, Gabriella Faro; and two great-grand dogs, Baxter and Lola. She was also predeceased by her brother, Leon “Puck” Diamont, and her sister, Joan Batman.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, July 28, 2014 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence. Memorial donations may be made in Ruth’s name to the Kelley Library, 234 Main St., Salem, N.H., 03079, where she was for many years a frequent and adored borrower.
